Every year, World Cleanup Day brings together millions of people across more than 190 countries, united by a shared mission: to combat the growing problem of waste pollution and protect the planet we all call home. From city streets to remote islands, individuals and communities join hands to act, proving that small, local efforts can contribute to a truly global impact. On September 20th, the Gili Lankanfushi team proudly joined this worldwide movement. This year, we were honoured to carry out our efforts close to home, together with our neighbours.

In total, over 250 participants came together on the island of Himmafushi for the cleanup effort. This included local residents, community leaders, and staff from three neighbouring resorts including Gili Lankanfushi, all working side by side. Of this number, 67 of our own Gili hosts travelled across to join the Himmafushi council and community in clearing litter and debris from beaches, streets, and shared spaces.

These efforts were not only about waste collection, but also about raising awareness of the importance of environmental stewardship. By collaborating across resorts and with the local community, the event highlighted how collective action in the Maldives can mirror the global fight against pollution.

At Gili Lankanfushi, one of our core beliefs is “Keeping Nature Natural.” This belief shapes our daily operations and inspires us to care for the fragile ecosystems around us. Participating in World Cleanup Day is just one example of how we put this value into practice. This helps to ensure that our work goes beyond the resort and positively impacts the wider community. The cleanup was also supported by our Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) Committee, which plays a central role in coordinating sustainability initiatives across the island. By engaging our staff and supporting global campaigns, the committee helps us remain accountable to our environmental and social commitments.
We extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined hands for this effort, the Himmafushi council, our neighbouring resorts, our Gili hosts, and the many local residents who participated. Together, we not only helped to preserve the natural beauty of the Maldives but also strengthened the bonds that tie us as neighbours and custodians of the ocean. As we reflect on this year’s event, we are reminded that even the smallest actions contribute to a greater impact.
