Note: The die off at 6 months was due to the El Nino event in April 2016. This caused the sea surface temperature to increase, which in turn damages the corals. To learn more about the El Nino and coral bleaching, head to our bleaching page here. Luckily, some fragments survived the event (which killed 80% of the coral on our house reef) and these resilient colonies will be used to help replenish the damaged reef system at One Palm Island. You can see in the one year photo how well the remaining colonies are growing!
Update, June 2021: the 4 remaining colonies had been left to grow on the nursery for several years and have grown to considerable sizes! Some colonies had even fused, creating a coral the size of a large football. They were successfully transplanted on to the natural reef and are now an integral part of the Maldives marine ecosystem.
