3 month update (July, 2021): while Pocillopora damicornis appears to be very resilient towards elevated temperatures; we have seen it grow in extremely shallow parts of the lagoon where the water increases in temperature considerably, it appears quite fragile and stress-prone when it comes to fragmenting the mother colony for a new coral line. This is reflected in the relatively high mortality rate and the decrease in fragment size. Now that the remaining fragments have survived the first critical stage, we hope they will continue to thrive and provide new heat-resistant colonies for the reefs around Gili Lankanfushi!
